Film scanners have made it easy to digitize a wide range of documents and store them on media such as hard drives. This is useful for personal papers and photos – but not adequate for more complex types of films such as an x-ray. Such film digitization usually involves some loss of image quality – which is absolutely unacceptable and can actually be dangerous when it comes to medical images used for diagnosis and treatment.
Specialized film digitization solutions have been developed that are appropriate for medical use, allowing for the high resolutions that are necessary for capturing all the information on the original radiographic film. X-Ray / MRI film digitizers convert the X-ray film image to digital data which can be stored and archived on the regular computer media..
Medical film digitizers are employed for a variety of applications, including PACS, mammography CAD, teleradiology, telemedicine, oncology besides others.. Medical film digitizers play an important transitory role as digital-to-analogue bridges in radiology. Film digitizers will continue to play a key role in medical imaging systems for many years to come.
DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is the medical image file format standard. It requires special DICOM reading software or viewing software. This is used by hospitals and medical facilities in their PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System).
